Gunnar Friel (*1967 in Cologne) graduated at the University Düsseldorf and holds a Master of Fine Arts from the Academy of Media Art Cologne (with Prof. Valie Export and Prof. David Larcher). In collaboration with Anja Vormann (Vormann/Friel) he realized interventions and installations in public spaces – concept based works, that deal with space and architecture, reflecting representation through digital media. Friel uses video and photography for researches about identity and social practice.

Gunnar Friel has exhibited internationally and received several fellowships and prizes, amongst others: Stiftung Kunstfonds Germany 2022, International Scholarship Casa Planas and Goethe Institut Barcelona (2020), Triangulo – International Research Program Centro University Mexico City (2015-2018), OrganHaus Association Chongqing China (2013), Fundación Caixa / Sa Nostra Media Art Grant for Spain (2009), German Prize for Video Art Marl, Special Award (2006), H.W. & J. Hector Prize for Contemporary Art, Kunsthalle Mannheim (2004), Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst der Landeshauptstadt Düsseldorf (2003) and Ministère de la Culture DRAC Alsac and Ecole Superieure des Arts Strasbourg (1997).

From 2007 to 2012 he has taught Video and Digital Media at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences - Peter Behrens School of Arts at the faculty of Design and is member of the Institute of Bild-Medien since 2012. In 2012 and 2014 he was member of the jury of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes (German Academic Scholarship Foundation). From 2010 – 2020 he was member of the Jury "Förderpreis für Bildende Kunst Düsseldorf". He has lectured in various international and interdisciplinary contexts, 2011 - 2013 at the BAU Escuela Superior de Diseño Barcelona, the Massana School of Art and Design in Barcelona and the Universidad del Norte, Baranquilla, Colombia.

In 2014 Gunnar Friel was teaching as Professor for Moving Images at the Münster University of Applied Sciences and since 2015 he is working as professor for Video and Digital Media at Centro University Mexico City.

In his artistic practice he investigates different qualities of spaces and their relationship to material and digital technology. His work results in media based objects and installations, videos and photography.
